It is a fully funded scholarship for international students. The scholarship is available for both master’s and doctoral studies. An annual stipend of £17,848 is provided along with health insurance and funding for academic development up to £2,000, as well as a family allowance of £10,120.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation created the Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program in October 2000, the largest single gift ever made to a UK university.
Through Gates Cambridge, 80 full-fee scholarships will be awarded to outstanding students from outside the United Kingdom by 2022 for postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge. A total of 25 awards will be given as part of the US round, and 55 will be given as part of the international round. Approximately two-thirds of these prizes will be available to doctoral candidates.
The following levels of study are available: Master’s and Doctorate.
Gates Cambridge International Scholarships are available to who?
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is available to students who are:
- Outside the United Kingdom, a citizen of any other country
- At the University of Cambridge, you may apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses:
- Doctorate
- MA/MLitt
- The postgraduate program lasts one year

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship provides the following benefits to the recipient:
- Amount of the University Composition Fee
- Students receive a maintenance allowance of £17,848 for a 12-month period (pro-rated for shorter courses) – PhD scholars receive up to four years’ support.
- At the beginning and end of the course, a single economy airfare will be provided
- The cost of inbound visas and the Immigration Health Surcharge
- You can receive up to £500 in academic development funding, depending on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
- One child is entitled to a family allowance of up to £10,120 and two or more children are entitled to an allowance of up to £14,440 (2021-22 rate). Partners are not funded.
- While on fieldwork as part of your PhD, you may apply for your maintenance allowance to be maintained (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs, since they should be funded by the University Composition Fee).
- For maternity or paternity leave, you may apply for an intermission of your studies for up to six months while receiving your maintenance allowance during this time.

Application instructions for Gates Cambridge Scholarships are as follows:
- Fill out the application for admission and the Gates Cambridge part of the funding.
- Register for a free account.
- Your personal information needs to be filled out
- The following documents must be submitted:
- Please explain your motivation for applying for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship in no more than 3000 characters (approximately 500 words).
- In a CV/resume
- Applicants for PhDs should submit a research proposal
- Gates Cambridge applicants submit two academic references as well as a reference about how they fit with the scholarship.
- Fill out the application questions.
- Application submission is required.
A Gates Cambridge Scholarship is not available for any of the following courses:
- Degrees at the undergraduate level, such as BAs (undergraduates) or BA affiliated degrees (second BAs).
- The Doctor of Business Administration (Doctor of Business Administration)
- Business Master’s Degree (MBA)
- The Master of Finance degree (MFin)
- Education Postgraduate Degree
- A clinical study of the MBBChir
- Part-time, six-year MD degree
- An Introduction to Medicine (A101)
- Degrees for part-time students
- The non-degree courses
