Siyabonga Zubane, the actor known for his role as Sdumo in the popular TV series “Gomora,” tragically took his own life last year, leaving the nation in shock. Siyabonga was celebrated for his remarkable portrayal of the character Sdumo in the Mzansi Magic telenovela “Gomora.”
Sdumo was a menacing thug in the series, known for offering his criminal services to the highest bidder and often partnering with his associate, Brains.
Together, they sowed fear in the Gomora community and were linked to various criminal activities, including the exploitation of school-going girls, all while operating under the funding of the powerful figure, Phumlani.
In the Gomora storyline, Sdumo was given a mission by Don Buthelezi to terrorize Don’s own family, which ultimately ended in tragedy when Ntokozo was shot. Sdumo and Brains engaged in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with MaSonto’s hijacking syndicate. The death of Don had profound consequences, exposing their criminal camp to hostile takeovers.
Siyabonga Zubane’s journey in “Gomora” began as a supporting character but quickly earned him a promotion to a lead actor in the third season of the show.
Before his untimely passing, Siyabonga Zubane, a Tembisa native, held a degree in Arts and Theatre Productions from the Tshwane University of Technology. He harbored grand aspirations and dreams, particularly hoping to secure roles in international film productions, often gravitating towards gangster roles that he had perfected over the years.
Inspired by actors like Warren Masemola, Vuyo Dabula, the late Menzi Ngubane, and Israel Matseke Zulu, Siyabonga Zubane remained deeply appreciative of the opportunity to work alongside one of his idols during his time on the set of “Gomora.” His untimely death was a profound loss to the entertainment industry and his admirers. And a year later, word has it that it was due to depression.
