From portraying Rose in Rhythm City to playing Jacobeth in Skeem Saam, Elizabeth Serunye stands out as one of the most talented actresses.

 

Elizabeth Serunye, born on March 12, 1971, in Limpopo, South Africa, is a celebrated actress known for her versatile roles in various drama series and films. Despite the challenges she faced at the beginning of her career, Serunye’s determination and talent have made her a well-respected figure in the South African entertainment industry.

Raised in Alexandra, a township north of Johannesburg, Serunye began her acting journey in 1986 by taking classes in her hometown. At the time, the industry offered little motivation as it was largely devoid of black actors. Despite this, her passion for acting kept her going through the difficult early years of her career. She struggled to find steady work, leading her to take up a job in retail to make ends meet.

Serunye’s first significant acting opportunity came at the age of twenty-three when she appeared on “Dinnete Tsa Bophelo.” In 2001, she landed roles on the popular television series “Generations” while simultaneously starting a street vending business, where she sold cakes for R5 to morning commuters.

Her breakthrough role came as Mapaseka Montsho in the drama series “Moferefere Lenyalong,” which earned her widespread recognition. She also starred as Zinzile in the second season of the comedy series “City Ses’la” and played Rose in the E.tv soap opera “Rhythm City.” Additionally, Serunye has appeared in films such as “Africa United” (2010), “Amandla” (2022), and “Skin” (2008).

In 2011, Serunye joined the cast of “Skeem Saam” as the strict and focused principal Jacobeth Thobakgale. Her portrayal of the character, who faces numerous challenges as an administrator at Turfloop High School, has made her one of the longest-serving actors on the show. Thobakgale’s storyline involves her facing betrayal from close friends and colleagues, leading to her dismissal due to corruption and mishandling of school funds. However, with the support of her daughter, she fights to reclaim her position and ultimately exposes those who conspired against her.

Outside of her acting career, Elizabeth Serunye is also a singer with the gospel group Exaltation Gospel Choir. She has appeared in other television productions, including “The Coconuts,” “Mzee Wa Two Six,” and “Ga Re Dumele.”
